BIAV CEO Talks to 3AW about the Better Boating Fund
“Things are way better than they used to be, some great progress has been made, and the government are committed to improving things for boaters. There is room for further improvement though, and for some greater clarity on the some of the spend.” BIAV CEO Steve Walker speaks to 3AW’s Tony Moclair about the annual $35M Better Boating Fund, and some recent media criticism that it has received. Listen here, from the 2:00 minute mark, for the full interview.
After years (decades) of BIAV advocacy and lobbying, in 2021 the Victorian Government passed legislation to establish the Better Boating Fund, as well as the Victorian Recreational Boating Strategy which outlines how the Fund will be allocated. The Fund is set up to dedicate every cent of all marine licensing and boat registration fees to improve boating safety and facilities: upgrade of boat ramps, enhanced infrastructure and facilities, maintenance and management, improved access and free parking, safer waterways, establishment of a dredging program, and more.
