GOLDEN TAG FISHING COMPETITION (VFA)
Win $10,000 and help fire affected communities
In response to the devastating bush fires and their impact on regional tourism businesses, the Victorian Fisheries Authority has established a tag-recapture competition that will encourage recreational fishers to return to East Gippsland and North East Victoria.
Details and rules
Competition start date
This will be announced as soon as it’s safe to enter all fire affected communities. We’re currently in consultation with Visit Victoria, local government bodies and other key partners.
What are the prizes and how do I win?
To win one of the prizes up for grabs, you'll need to catch a fish with a golden tag.
The first ten fishers to catch a fish with a golden tag and report it will win a $10,000 prize. All tagged fish caught and reported after these first ten will be worth $2,000 each for the duration of the promotion.
Who can claim a prize?
No registration is required. The prizes are eligible for any recreational fisher with a Victorian fishing licence (unless they are exempt) who catches a tagged fish by legal methods. The $10,000 prize will be limited to one per individual.
Victorian Fisheries Authority staff members and contractors, including family members, are excluded from claiming the prizes.
I caught one! How do I claim a prize?
Record the length of the fish;
Photograph the fish with the tag still in place (make sure you take a secondary close-up photo of the tag which clearly shows the number);
Remove the tag (cut it off carefully close to the fish’s skin) and keep it in a safe place;
Contact the Victorian Fisheries Authority on 03 9658 4737;
Provide your name, contact details, tag number, species of fish, waterway, location the fish was caught and overall length;
Bag and size limits apply.
Can I release the fish and still collect the prize?
Yes, providing you have taken the necessary photos of the tagged fish and carefully removed the tag, you may release it.
Keep in mind that if the fish is under or over the slot limits for Murray cod (55 - 75cm) and dusky flathead (30 - 55cm) they must be released.
What do the tags look like?
The tags are standard T-Bar fish tags (pictured right) and are specially marked yellow with the following wording on the tag “VFA WINNER Golden tag Ph 0396584737”.
