The Boating Industry Association of Victoria is the peak body for the marine sector. It represents an industry worth $4.5 Billion dollars to the Victorian economy and provides over 17,700 FTE jobs.

BIA logoThe BIAV is member driven, with an elected Board that oversees the management of the association by a small but dynamic staff, in meeting the aims and objectives of the association to develop a progressive and sustainable industry and to promote recreational boating.

The BIAV own and operate the Melbourne Boat Show with proceeds from this event returned to benefit the industry via BIAV activities.

There are currently 395,431 current Marine Licences, 190,428 registered boats and 996,000* boating participants in Victoria (*2015-2016 Marine Safety Incidents Stats Annual Report and Morgan Poll 2012 – Victorian and Tasmanian ).


Trailer boating is the most affordable sector of the recreational boating industry. Boats range in price from $4,000 for a 4m boat up to $140,000 for a 7.5m boat. Nearly half of Victorian boat owners are in the $37,000 to $80,000 income bracket.


Over 95% of Victorian recreational vessel registrations are trailered boats which are less than 8m in length.


68% of Victorian registered boats are operated on Port Phillip and Westernport Bays each year.
