MARINE SAFETY REGULATIONS 2022 - HAVE YOUR SAY

The Department of Transport is seeking feedback on the draft Marine Safety Regulations 2022.

The Regulations are due to expire 10 years after their making, and stakeholder input is being sought on proposed changes.

BIAV has performed a preliminary review and generally speaking sees the department’s intentions as balanced and reasonable. Two areas however, where BIAV will be looking a little further are, Life Jackets and Mobile Phones.

It is currently mandatory for the wearing of Life Jackets at all times when in vessels less than 4.8m in length and at times of heightened risk in an open area of longer and larger vessels . BIAV supports the carrying of Life Jackets at all times, however wonders whether the requirement to wear them at all times is valid, or whether a preference would be to come in line with the other Australian states where this is not the case.

In terms of Mobile Phones, the enquiry relates to them being considered as suitable equipment to carry as an alternative to flares, noting that other alternatives proposed to be added include a compressed air horn, a GPS, an EPIRB a PLB, or a VHF marine radio. Read More
