INDUSTRY INVITATION - APPRENTICESHIP FOCUS

BIAV invites you to attend an important information session in relation to HeadStart and apprenticeships.

HeadStart is a Victorian Government initiative that can help you secure one or more suitable apprentices.

Head Start is a new model for apprenticeships and traineeships for school students, where they spend more time doing important, paid, on-the-job training while completing their VCE or VCAL at school. The program helps students to develop skills and experience that employers value. Head Start helps students to get the best start in their career.

Students taking part in the program will undertake one day per week paid employment in year 10, two days per week paid employment in year 11, and three days per week paid employment in year 12 (which may be undertaken over two years if required). Whilst of course completing school on those other days.

There are currently over 40 courses listed and they can be seen here. Amongst them, you will see Certificate III in Marine Mechanical Technology. HeadStart has confirmed that other courses are being added all the time and that if the boating industry wanted Shipwright, Boat Builder, Marine Trimming or other courses added, they certainly will be.

There is also a map of engaged schools which may also be helpful to you, however geography challenges, if there is not a nearby school, is not expected to be a problem. If you’d like to know more, or if you have some ideas we’d love to see you at the information session.

Also to be outlined will be any update we have with regard to government funding of apprenticeships. Noting, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg’s budget announcement this week in regard to the Federal Government’s plan to provide a 50 percent subsidy for businesses employing apprentices and trainees. The COVID recovery Job Trainer Program that was launched early in 2020 to support apprentices can also be discussed if required however at this stage it is set to conclude in March 2021.

“Mercury is engaged in this program and we are really pleased with it. We have a HeadStart apprentice on-site with us in Dandenong and several others across our dealer network. The target schools seem to come up with highly suitable kids and the whole process works really well"
- Mercury’s Trevor Henri (who is also a member of the BIAV Education and Industry Skills Committee)
