    Port Phillip Boating Centre

We talked to Phillip Pierias, owner and managing director, of Port Phillip Boating Centre in Point Cook.

1-2269Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came into the marine industry.

As a young lad my passion was always fishing and boating as a result I started my apprenticeship in 1991 as an automotive/marine trimmer. The marine side of the trade was always my focus and in 1993 started my own business Advanced Trimming working from my parent’s garage. In 1997 I moved into a small factory in Hoppers Crossing were it all began.

Can you give us some background on Port Phillip Boating Centre including how and when it came into operation.

As mentioned working on the boats in my trimming shop my sights were set on the marine/retail industry and in 2003 and opportunity to buy a small marine dealership in Melton (Melton Marine) came up. I did this and moved the business to Point Cook and renamed it Port Phillip Boating Centre. Our grand opening was on the 15th October 2003 stocking the brands Haines Hunter, Yamaha Outboards and Dunbier/Mackay Trailers. We still stock and service the same brands today.

What is the best part about being in business in the marine industry for you?

The best part of the business for me is the fact that I can share my passion and knowledge with my customers in an environment that I love. I get to fish in some of the best products in Australia and make some great friends. I must say that delivering a new boat to a customer and see the joy that it brings to them and their family is the most satisfying thing.

What do you value most about your membership in BIAV?

The support we as a business get from the BIAV when it comes to boat show and the commitment to the boating industry on a political level is something I value from the BIAV.

What advice can you give to those that want to enter into a career in the marine industry or start their own business?

If the passion is there then a career in the marine industry is a great thing. When thinking of starting your own business in the marine industry the most important thing is to believe in the product you sell and believe in your ability to provide the best customer service possible at all times. If you honestly believe then so will your customer.

Where do you like to go boating or fishing or spend your leisure time?

Growing up in Melbourne and spending a lot of my younger years in Safety Beach Dromana, Port Phillip Bay has a special place in my heart but offshore on the south coast of NSW chasing the mighty marlin would have to be at the top of my list.
